Design Thinking Academy encourages students to engage in community service and service learning opportunities. The National Honor Society and Interact Club are just two of the student-led clubs that actively participate in community service projects and events.
As a part of the graduation requirement, all students are required to complete 25 hours of community service per year at our school. Students are encouraged to volunteer for a non-profit organization that they are passionate about and that allows them to use their skills and experience to help others. One great resource to find community service opportunities is the Volunteer Delaware website. There, you can search for opportunities by interest, location, and/or organization. Students may also request an appointment with their guidance counselor for additional support.
Delaware Volunteer Credit Program
Would you like to earn an elective credit for your service to others? If you complete at least 90 hours of community service with an approved non-profit organization during two semesters, you can earn the Delaware Volunteer Credit. This elective credit counts towards your graduation requirements. You will also receive a certificate signed by the Governor of Delaware and the Secretary of Education. Below is some additional information about the program. If you are interested in this opportunity, schedule an appointment with your guidance counselor to learn more.
Presidential Volunteer Service Award
If you complete 100 hours of community service during a 12 month period, you can earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA.) With this award, you will earn an official Presidential Volunteer Service Award lapel pin, a personalized certificate of achievement, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
After completing 100 or more hours, please see your counselor for the PVSA paperwork.
